Oh Hello, 26.

April 9, 2010

Enjoy your birthday cake since tomorrow we'll return to judging you based on every single morsel you ingest

This weekend I turn 26. And it’s hitting me harder than expected.

Last year I gave the heave-ho to Deadbeat Tattoed Guy and I was all “Woohoo! 25 and single! BRING IT, Chicago!” And then proceeded to have a year full of partying and dating and nothing overly emotional… besides a disastrous tryst with Crazyface the Fratty CommitmentPhobe.

But now here I sit, another year older. I’d tell you I’m totally cool with my diamond-less ring finger, but 1. I don’t like to lie to you and 2. I write a blog called The Engagement Project, so you might be on to me.

Of course, I have Love Interest E in my life. Whether he ends up being my future or just my present remains up to debate, but since I haven’t given a good L.I.E. [as some on the twitters have taken to calling him] update in a while, I figured this would be a good time. Happy Birthday to me.

Here’s 3 recent Love Interest E inspired swoons:

1. Love Interest E hauled a humongous new coffee table up to my third floor walk-up. And he didn’t. even. complain. Swoon.

2. With no prompting/hinting/whining from me, Love Interest E planned a fancy dinner date at Carnivale for the night of my birthday. Swoon.

3. Love Interest E has invited me to meet his parents. A quaint dinner for 4 at Bistro 110. Swoon.

Someone get me some smelling salts.

After my last break up, I wasn’t sure what my future held. Now things are looking up. I refound myself and I landed someone who makes me laugh, sings karaoke and poaches a mean egg.

No matter what number you’re at this year, do not panic. The next coffee table-hauling, egg-poaching, dead guy-finding Love Interest of your own might be right around the corner.

…right around the corner? That sounds like something MOMS would say. They’re always coming out with something like that to calm you down and lift you up. Meanwhile, they stay awake at night hoping to hell for your sake that they’re right!

Happy 26th! I’d add, “Be good to yourself”, but it appears as though for this weekend, someone else has got it covered!

Hopefully, YOUR mom won’t start watching Fox News when she reaches decrepitude, thereby reversing the credibility trend … better to gently fade into serenity. Or is that senility? same difference.

If I weren’t so lazy, I’d start my own blog! I’d call it, The Disengagement Project. Nice ring to it.

nah, my mom just hangs bat houses in her yard, ON PURPOSE. so make what you will of that.

anyway, you should start that blog. i’d read it.

I just found your blog yesterday and read all the archives. I heart it so much. Happy Birthday to you. I’m 31 and getting engaged this year…next month actually, on MY 32nd birthday. He doesn’t know I know and I hate that I know because there is no surprise but excited just the same, we’ve been dating over 3 years and he’s always told me he didn’t want to get married. I guess I changed his mind without saying a word! Your engagement will happen some day and I hope it is everything you thought it would be and more.

Happy Birthday! And remember, it’s not like your 36 🙂

PS. I think we moonlight for each other’s blog while the other’s too drunk to type.

You’re 26 which means you can still say you’re in your mid-twenties. Sounds a lot better than being in your late twenties which you might have to start saying when you turn 27, and definitely will have to start saying when you turn 28. And then 30, well, don’t get me started… That shit sucks…
